Counseling at Horizons

Counseling is a professional, collaborative relationship designed to support individuals and couples in achieving greater mental health, well-being, and personal growth. At its core, counseling empowers clients to better understand themselves, navigate challenges, and move toward goals that align with their values and life priorities.

Counseling is both structured and relational. It provides a purposeful, goal-oriented space where clients can gain insight, learn practical skills, and address concerns in partnership with their counselor. At the same time, it is a deeply relational process that prioritizes emotional safety, trust, and the healing impact of a strong therapeutic connection. Meaningful counseling integrates both elements—offering guidance and structure while honoring the importance of relationship and collaboration.

Beyond symptom reduction or diagnosis, counseling takes a holistic approach to care. It supports overall wellness, improved quality of life, and sustainable personal and relational growth. Each counseling experience is individualized, shaped by the client’s goals, pace, strengths, and lived experience. Throughout the process, counselor and client work together to foster clarity, resilience, and meaningful change.

We look forward to partnering with you in this work. Below, you’ll find more information about the counseling services we offer at Horizons.

  • We provide person-centered counseling for adolescents and adults of all ages, orientations, and backgrounds. Using EMDR, CBT, and humanistic approaches, we support clients navigating anxiety, OCD, chronic pain or illness, trauma, PTSD, stress, mood disorders, and relational challenges. Our goal is to create a safe, affirming space where your experiences and strengths are honored while fostering growth, resilience, and overall well-being.

Individual counseling is offered as a 60 minute service.

  • Couples counseling provides a supportive, trauma-informed space where partners can strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and work through challenges together. Therapy focuses on increasing understanding of relational patterns, exploring the impact of past experiences, and improving emotional connection in ways that feel safe and respectful for both partners.

Sessions are collaborative and tailored to each couple’s needs, helping partners develop healthier ways of navigating conflict, expressing needs, and fostering greater security and intention in their relationship. The goal is to support lasting connection, resilience, and meaningful change—at a pace that honors each partner’s experience.

Couple’s counseling is offered as a 90 minute service.

  • What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for healing trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic illness or pain, and life stressors. EMDR helps individuals reprocess difficult experiences, reduce emotional distress, and build resilience and new positive beliefs. It does this through a mixture of talk therapy and bilateral stimulation. Our compassionate clinicians provide personalized care to foster emotional well-being, recovery, and long-lasting growth.

    How do we use it?

In our practice, EMDR is integrated as a structured and collaborative approach to help clients process distressing experiences and strengthen adaptive coping. We begin by developing a strong foundation of stabilization, emotional regulation, and clear treatment goals. Once clients feel prepared, we use EMDR’s bilateral stimulation techniques to safely reprocess traumatic memories, performance blocks, and patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, or pain-related distress.

For clients living with chronic illness or chronic pain, EMDR helps reduce the emotional and physiological burden associated with long-term symptoms and medical trauma. For high-performing professionals, athletes, first responders, and veterans, EMDR is also used to target performance barriers, enhance focus, and reduce stress responses that interfere with functioning.

Throughout the process, we tailor EMDR protocols to each client’s personal needs, integrating them with counseling strategies to promote resilience, clarity, and meaningful, lasting change.

EMDR is offered as both a 60 or 90 minute service. Your counselor will help determine what will best fit your needs.

Coaching at Horizons

Coaching and counseling both offer meaningful support, but they serve different purposes. Coaching is a collaborative, future-focused process that helps clients clarify goals, build skills, and take actionable steps toward personal or professional growth. It emphasizes accountability, performance, and forward momentum. Counseling, on the other hand, provides therapeutic space to explore emotions, past experiences, and underlying patterns that may be impacting well-being. It focuses on healing, insight, and strengthening mental and emotional health. Both approaches can complement each other, offering a well-rounded path to growth and resilience.

  • Our performance and leadership coaching helps individuals—from athletes to professionals and organizational leaders—strengthen mental resilience, sharpen focus, and elevate their ability to perform under pressure. Using counseling-informed strategies, we support clients in overcoming performance barriers, managing stress, building confidence, and cultivating habits that support consistent, high-level execution. Whether you're leading a team, navigating high-stakes environments, or striving for personal excellence, our coaching empowers you to perform with clarity, purpose, and sustainable mental strength.

  • Our Christian vocational coaching supports pastors, ministry leaders, and those discerning a call to serve by integrating faith-based guidance with professional development. We help clients navigate the unique challenges of ministry—such as burnout, role clarity, leadership pressures, and spiritual discernment—while cultivating emotional resilience and sustainable rhythms of service. Through a blend of biblical insight and counseling-informed strategies, we offer a grounded, compassionate space for exploring your calling, strengthening your leadership, and aligning your ministry work with your gifts, values, and long-term vision.

Your Questions, Answered

  • Deciding whether therapy is right for you is a personal choice, and we want you to feel informed and empowered in making that decision. Therapy can be helpful when you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or navigating challenging experiences, and it can also provide space to build resilience, deepen self-understanding, and reconnect with what matters most to you. If you would like support in determining what feels right, we are here to help and offer a complimentary consultation call to answer your questions and provide additional information.

  • Therapy is a personal approach that can go at the pace you need it to! However, for best results we recommend starting at weekly or biweekly sessions. From there, you and your therapist can decide together what schedule feels right for you.

  • The length of therapy varies depending on your goals, needs, and the challenges you’re working through. Some people notice meaningful changes within a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support to navigate more complex or persistent concerns. We check in regularly to ensure treatment stays aligned with your goals, supports your resilience, and helps you build lasting well-being in a safe, supportive environment.

  • We work with individuals ranging from adolescents to older adults. It is our priority to provide inclusive care to clients of all orientations, belief systems, and backgrounds. We provide counseling to couples and individuals, and provide coaching and consulting services to individuals, groups, and organizations.

  • We offer in-person sessions at our office space or secure telehealth sessions you can attend from your preferred location. We do require you have a safe, private location to accommodate telehealth so that we can ensure your confidentiality.  Just let your therapist know what you prefer!

  • We do not prescribe medication; however, we are happy to help coordinate care and communicate with a prescribing clinician, such as a psychiatrist or primary care physician. Medication can be an important part of your wellness journey, and we are committed to supporting you in every way we can.

  • Yes! Kathryn Large accepts Aetna insurance. Please contact us for more information about coverage and payment options. We also provide out of network support to help you understand and access your benefits.

  • Out-of-network billing means we do not accept or work with insurance directly. You pay for sessions upfront, and we can provide a superbill—a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement amounts vary, so it’s a good idea to check with your insurance provider.

We use Mentaya to help our clients understand their insurance options. Mentaya is a service that makes it easier to get reimbursed by your insurance for out‑of‑network therapy. Instead of you submitting superbills and handling claims yourself, Mentaya handles the paperwork and communication with your insurance company on your behalf. They charge a small fee per claim, and many people find it simplifies the reimbursement process and helps them get money back more easily. All of our clients are welcome to use Mentaya, but it is not required to work with us.

  • We do not offer a sliding scale. Our rates for all services can be found under the services page above.

  • Like talk therapy, EMDR is not a one-size-fits all approach, however most EMDR therapy includes elements of history taking and assessment, preparation, processing, and integrating new ideas and beliefs for you to utilize for the future. The order of these elements, and the amount of time spent doing each one, will depend on a client’s individual needs and the collaborative treatment plan a therapist and client create.

  • We are happy to provide brief support or answer questions between sessions using our secure messaging platform or sending us an email. For more in depth discussions, we recommend you discuss during your scheduled session so that we can ensure you receive adequate care and support.

If you are experiencing a crisis and need to be seen immediately,  we recommend calling the alachua county crisis center at 352-264-6789 or calling the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, at 988.

  • We do not offer same day appointments or walk-ins; however, we are passionate about timely care and making sure every client receives the support they need. We will do our best to respond to you as soon as possible.
